The George Daniels Collection of motorcars and motorcycles will headline the 2012 Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed auction, scheduled for Friday 29th June on the Tapestry Lawn at Goodwood House in Chichester, Sussex. The jewel in the crown of the George Daniels Collection is the ex-Sir Henry Tim Birkin 1929-32 Bentley 4½-Litre Supercharged Single-Seater which set the Brooklands Outer Circuit Lap Record at more than 137mph in 1931. Bonhams set a preauction estimate of £3 million to £4 million, or roughly $4.75 million to $6.3 million.
As the first of the supercharged so-called Blower Bentleys, the car was nicknamed the Brooklands Battleship after the race circuit in England, where it set a lap record of 137.96 miles per hour. It finished first in the 1929 Brooklands Six Hour Race and 500 Mile Race, and claimed victories in the 1929 Irish Grand Prix and 1929 Tourist Trophy.
The auction will present a collection of seven cars and two motorcycles that belonged to George Daniels, a British watchmaker who died last year, and it is expected to sell for $12.6 million.
