$50,000 seems a lot of money for a Dress, especially one that’s not even brand new! But, that’s exactly the sum an unknown British couture collector paid for the size 4, strapless, black polka-dotted dress on 1stdibs.com. The Black Swan star, Natalie Portman, who is an ambassador for the French fashion house and fronts the brand’s Miss Dior Cherie fragrance, borrowed the gown from vintage New York dealer, Rare Vintage, which upon its return put it up for auction through 1stdibs.com.
The red silk organza ball gown with black polka dots came from Christian Dior’s spring/summer 1954 collection created at the height of the legendary couturier’s distinguished career and just 3 years before his untimely death. It was part of Dior’s New Look, a radical and luxurios idea in post-WWII fashion. The New Look comprised of a tiny, corseted waist and a full skirt, and required much larger than usual volumes of fabric to create.
The actress’s look was created by top stylist Kate Young, who works closely with Rare Vintage owner Juliana Carione, who said of the choice: Natalie wore a dress that she fell in love with. It was the perfect dress on the perfect girl. I think it was also a great tribute to the modernity and timelessness of vintage fashion.
We couldn’t agree more.
