As expected, ten Princess Diana’s most iconic dresses sold for a whopping amount at Kerry Taylor Auctions at Bermondsey in south-east London two days ago. Some of the “most important and iconic” dresses worn by Prince Charles’s glamorous former wife fetched £800,000 ($1.2 million) and thus exceeded its estimated price of £600,000 ($915,000).
The star of the auction was the Strapless Dark Blue Velvet Gown worn at a 1985 dinner thrown by US president Ronald Reagan in honour of the Prince and Princess of Wales (a gown she famously wore while dancing with actor John Travolta). It was bought for £240,000 ($363.000) by a British gentleman who said he wanted to buy it as a surprise to cheer up his wife.
Nine others gowns, including two Diana’s Catherine Walker looks sold on Tuesday to a various buyers and “important” British museum, at prices ranging from £24,000($36,500) to £240,000 ($364,500).
Created by some of Diana’s favourite designers including Zandra Rhodes, Bruce Oldfield and Victor Edelstein, these gowns were worn by the princess during official trips to Austria, Australia, Brazil, India, South Korea and the United States.
