With a top speed of 265.7mph, Hennessey Venom GT became the fastest production car that can be bought in the market and legally drive on public roads. The record was achieved on 9 February 2013 at the airport runway of a U.S. military base in California, but Hennessey has just now gone public with official information.

Although the result is not debatable, the title of the fastest is, since the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport officially recorded a higher top speed of 267.8 mph. However, a Veyron has been a test specimen whose speed was not limited to the factory, while the cars shipped to customers was with electronic speed limit of 257.87mph. Due to these facts, Hennessey claims that the Venom GT is the fastest cars in the category that can be found in stores and can be used for everyday driving.
Company founder, John Hennessey claims that the speed of 265.7mph is the maximum that Venom GT can reach. “In order to achieve even better results we will continue to try. All we need is a longer runway or road sections, to reach the maximum that this car can provide,” said Hennessey. In early 2013 Venom GT entered the Guinness Book of World Records, since from 0 to 180mph accelerates in just 13.63 seconds.
Hennessey Venom GT based on Lotus Elise/Exige model, and instead of the original Lotus unit, driven by the 7.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine can develop 1262 hp. The plan is to produce a total of 29 specimens, and the price of the car is around $1.2 million.
