The Macallan distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Moray. Single malt whisky is whisky distilled at a single distillery from water and malted barley but without the addition of any other cereals, and by batch distillation in pot stills.
They own the title of the most expensive scotch in the world, The Macallan 64 Year Old in Lalique! The scotch was sold for $460,000 at an auction at Sotheby’s, New York on November 2010, breaking the record for the most expensive whisky ever sold, and claiming the title of world’s most expensive scotch. The special decanter was designed and created by famed French designer Lalique, and contains 1.5 litres of the rare “The Macallan” whisky. The special decanter, itself, is crafted with a unique “cire perdue”, or “lost wax” method.
The Macallan is known for its participating in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall. Bond and M are seen drinking “50-year-old Macallan”, a possible reference to 50 years of James Bond. “The Macallan” is also thanked in the end credits for Skyfall.
Nowadays at the Bonham’s Whisky, Cognac & Rare Spirits Auction a 1951 edition bottle, for which the whisky was distilled in 1926, has reach a price tag of $40,460 including the buyer’s premium. The buyers in the United States showed a very keen interest in the lot and the premium of whiskies and cognacs were actually picked up by them. However, there were some bidders on the online forum from the East Asia, Australia, UK, and even Scandinavia who participated in auction event.
