You do not often get the chance to live in a castle. Now you can be a king and have one of its own castle for just $2,300 per month. Bellister Castle was built in the 19 century and therefore boasts more modern comforts than the 14 century ruins it is attached to. Owned by the National Trust since 1976, it is available to rent for a 10 year period. The castle, which lies just outside the village of Haltwhistle, is approached along a tree lined drive and is surrounded by mature grounds including a walled garden, lawns, stables and an orchard.
The property is part of the Bellister Estate, which was owned by Robert de Ros and his descendants form 1191 to 1295 and the castle was remodelled by famous Newcastle architect John Dobson in 1841.
The property offers lots of space for a family with children and has seven-bedrooms, three bathrooms, intricate ceiling mouldings, open fires and grand reception rooms, kitchen with glorious green views, butler’s sink and a large range and wide oak staircase.
With all of this you get also a ghost. Bellister Castle is said to be haunted by the ‘Grey Man’, the ghost of a minstrel who, having been unjustly accused of being a spy was savaged to death by hounds as he fled the castle. Little creepy don’t you think, but you can ask for part of the rent from ghost, and go even cheaper.
