These days Batmobiles are very much in demand. An original 1966 Batmobile was sold at auction for a whopping $4,620,000. Also, Hammacher Schlemmer offers the roadworthy replica of famous car featured in the iconic 1966 TV show for $200,000. Recently, other replica of iconic Batmobile, driven by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” film from 1989 was sold for £72,800 ($120,000) by a UK auction house – Historics at Brooklands.
The original car was built on a Chevrolet Impala chassis with a Chevrolet V8 engine. All the gadgets (aside from the Cocoon-mode) on the Keaton-mobile in both movies were fully functional although the exhaust after-burner could only be run for 15 seconds at a time due to the amount of fuel it consumed. A Jet turbine engine delivers 1,5000lbs. of thrust which powers this sensational creation from 0 to 60mph in less than 3.7 seconds. It was created to be the ultimate in automotive styling, engineering and design with everything on this supercar handcrafted with all the latest in space-age materials, alloys and parts.
This street-legal tribute to the 1989 Michael Keaton Batmobile was made for promotional purposes and has been displayed at many exhibitions and motor shows.
