One of four gold medals that American Olympic legend Jesse Owens won at 1936 Olympics in Berlin sold for a record $1.46m in an online auction in California. That is the highest price ever paid for a piece of Olympic memorabilia, and also beats the $865,000 paid last year for a silver cup won at the 1896 Olympics, according to Laguna Niguel-based auction house, SCP Auctions.
New owner of this piece of history is Ron Burkle, a billionaire investor and co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, who plans to use it for a future educational tour of historic pieces.
SCP said it raised almost $4.5 million from 1,000 sports memorabilia items at the auction. One more interesting item sold at auction was a baseball bat used by Jackie Robinson in 1949 that sold for $183,500.
