Earlier this year, the U.S.Mint announced the opening of a national coin design competition that would finish with the Secretary of the Treasury selecting the images for their planned 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin. Finally, we have a chance to see the winning product – the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin designed by Cassie McFarland. This will be first curved coin released by the U.S. Mint in the history of ever. In 2014, the Mint will make commemorative gold, silver and “clad” (nickel-plated copper) in denominations of $5, $1 and $0.50.
The coin’s design, which was chosen from 178 citizen submissions, features a baseball glove on the obverse (the “heads” side) and a baseball on the reverse. The common inscriptions on each coin’s obverse are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2014. The half-dollar coin will have the highest mintage limit, producing 750,000 across all options. According to the U.S. Mint, 400,000 of the silver-dollar coin will be minted and only 50,000 of the $5 gold piece will be made.
You can read on the U.S.Mint website: “While these will be the first curved coins ever minted by the United States Mint, it did produce the curved 1973 Roberto Walker Clemente Congressional Gold Medal in honor of the late Pittsburgh Pirates star right fielder.”
The baseball coins will go on sale sometime in early 2014.
