Rare gold coins highlight at Heritage Auctions’ Atlanta ANA National Money Show on February 27-28. This auction is loaded with gold rarities, including always in-demand early issues, low mintage 19th century issues, 20th century coinage that saw very limited release, and proofs. An 1845 quarter eagle, graded Proof-67 Ultra Cameo by NGC, is considered the finest of only three confirmed examples of this early proof issue. Pedigreed to the Trompeter collection, this coin originated as a part of a three piece gold proof set struck during a period where proofs of any kind were rarely produced.
Many of the rarest 20th century gold coins had relatively high mintages but were released in extremely small quantities to circulation, with the vast majority of examples finding the melting pot after 1933. The 1920-S eagle was one of the last five issues of the ten dollar gold series. Of those five issues, two (the 1926 and 1932) are very common, but the other three are rarities, worthy of intense collector attention in any grade. Our Atlanta auction features a 1920-S eagle graded MS65 by NGC, an impressive grade on an absolute basis and doubly impressive since the 1920-S is the premier condition rarity of the entire Indian Head eagle series.
US gold coins minted before 1834 range from very scarce to virtually unobtainable, and a single example would be the highlight of most collections. This auction features a 1826 half eagle, also graded MS65 by NGC, likely the second or third finest example known. Only 30-35 examples of this date are believed to exist in all grades.
