Bob Dylan created more than 300 drawings during his 1989-1992 world tour, and later reworked many of them in watercolour and gouache. Now, legendary musician has made his debuts in New York art gallery with an exhibition of 40 drawings, limited editions and paintings. Based on a series of drawings he called “Drawn Blank Series,” these artworks range from €1,800 ($2,500) for a limited edition print, to €288,000 ($400,000) for an original acrylic painting.
Mickey Ross, owner of the Ross Art Group gallery on Madison Avenue in New York explained the foundations of the exhibition.
“The series started with Bob Dylan’s sketches while he was travelling on the road,” he said. “Most of these sketches were done over 15 years ago. They were put together in a book at one point as black and white sketches. And it was a book that was published by Random House called “Drawn Blank Series”.
The collection of prints, watercolors and acrylic paintings were shown in Germany in 2007. At the same paintings based on the original drawings he did some years ago are on exhibit at Weatherby Fine Art in Perth Australia. And last October, Halcyon Gallery in London had Dylan’s “Mood Swings” exhibit, in which iron works by Dylan were exhibited along with paintings and signed limited editions. But, the New York exhibition will be the first time the drawings are exhibited in the United States.
The Bob Dylan art exhibit will run from May 8 – 30 at the Ross Art Group gallery in New York. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS research.
