Ever wondered to just fly off while waiting in the long queues of a traffic jam? If yes, then your dream could become a reality soon. Texas-based start-up AVX Aircraft Corp. introduced one of its most advanced research projects for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The AVX Aircraft Company’s new airborne SUV, a sort of Hummer with retractable wings, or a helicopter with wheels if you prefer, does everything a Hummer can do with the addition of Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capability.
The high mobility all-terrain vehicle can carry four persons and travel 250 miles by land and air on a single tank of fuel. AVX TX converts from road to flight mode in a mere 60 seconds, has a cruising speed equivalent to a light aircraft and features automated takeoff/landing flight control. It will move at speeds of 80mph on the road, 30mph on rough terrainand 140mph in the air. With a consignment of 1,040 lbs., AVX Aircraft’s Flying SUV can cruise at an altitude of 10,000 ft. fully laden.
Although the concept is being developed for the U.S. army, but so many things that we use in our daily life comes from military. Looks like the Terrafugia flying car is all set for some stiff competition.
