The value of video games is rising. This sobering fact is something both old and new retro gamers are unfortunately having to adjust to, making the hobby we know and love another ball in the budgeting juggle we all have to face. One recent offer on eBay, for the factory-sealed 1987 Nintendo NES Stadium Events has shocked us – since it could reach $100,000. A 30-year-old plastic games cartridge is set to smash the world record for the most expensive computer game ever sold, if bidding continues to rise at this pace.
According to the description, only a small number of the game were sold when Nintendo purchased the rights to a dance mat-style controller from Bandai. Just 2,000 copies of the game had been sold when stores were instructed to pull it from shelves and destroy them, making it one of the rarest games in existence.
The seller of the rare game claims to be a former Nintendo employee who has had it in his possession since the early 90s. He told GameSpot: “I did not realise the value until 2011, when a story came out about this game being sold on eBay for $44,000. I told my wife ‘I know I have that game.’
“I collect a lot of different items, so after looking through several boxes I found it. Since I was still working for Nintendo I could not sell this item for profit, which is a smart company policy. When I left in 2012, it was possible for me to sell this game,” he said.
