Alberto Giacometti’s human-scale bronze sculpture – “Pointing man” could fetch a record $130 million at Christie’s New York on May 11th. The 70-inch (180-cm) bronze sculpture is one of only a handful of art works to command a presale estimate in excess of $100 million. The hand-painted work from 1947 which depicts a figure pointing with his right arm will be offered on sale for the first time.

“‘Pointing Man’ is unquestionably Giacometti’s greatest sculpture,” said Jussi Pylkkanen, Christie’s global president. “This example stands apart from all others because it is unique. It was hand-painted by the artist himself.’’
Giacometti’s auction record of $103.4 million was achieved at Sotheby’s in London in 2010 for the artist’s “Walking Man” sculpture, at the time a record for any artwork at auction.
