Cartier’s ruby weighing 25.59 carats has sold for a world record 28.25 million Swiss francs ($30.42 million) at Sotheby’s auction in Geneva. A Burmese “Sunrise Ruby” from Myanmar, part of a collection of Cartier jewels up for auction, exceeded estimates that ranged from $12 million to $18 million. After competitive bidding on Tuesday, the “pigeon blood” ruby went to an anonymous telephone bidder. It set a record for a ruby and was also a record for a Cartier jewel at auction.
Also, a rare 8.72-carat Fancy Vivid Pink diamond that is said to have links to the niece of Napoleon I, Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, fetched $15.9 million. Estimates called for $14 million to $18 million.
