An increasing number of auctions’ records these days. Recently held Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York recorded a new record for the famed pop artist Andy Warhol. His large-scale Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) was sold for $105 million and smashed his previous record by more than $30 million. The buyer wasn’t identified.
This painting dated back from 1963, and is the only one of four car crash paintings on this scale, from the artist’s seminal Death and Disasters series. The monumental silkscreen, which measures 8 feet by 13 feet captures the immediate aftermath of a car crashing into a tree.
Warhol’s painting of an oversized Coke bottle, titled as Coca-Cola (3) sold for $57.2 million Tuesday at Christie’s auction house, while his previous record was set in 2007 when “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I)” sold for $71.7 million.
