It looks like the big boys are ready to make the move into convenient small scale vehicles as British automakers Aston Martin announce their plans to begin production on the Cygnet, a model heavily based on Toyota’s iQ. Aston Martin has begun its PR assault to attempt to assure its customers that the Cygnet is more than a gussied-up Toyota iQ. The company just released a new video detailing exactly what makes the compact fit into the Aston Martin bloodline.
The Cygnet is a rebadged Toyota iQ equipped with the same 97hp 1.3-liter engine but outfitted with a high-end, sartorial interior that’s been enveloped with hand-stitched leather. It’s a drastic break from Aston Martin’s current line up of performance cars, but adding a fuel-sipper will help the British carmaker comply with tightening European emissions standards and could help it achieve the 35 mpg Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that will go into effect in the U.S. in 2016
While more specifications on the Aston Martin Cygnet are touted to be out soon, sources are putting a price tag between $45,000 and $75,000 on this tinsel vehicle.
