Harrods iconic entrance hall is to undergo £20 million renovation. London’s biggest department store was first who brought escalators to England in the Eighties and Nineties. Now, the Hans Crescent entrance will get a new attire, beginning in January 2016. The project includes sixteen sets of double escalators “clad in a sinuous sheath of nickel bronze,” which will be installed from the lower ground to fifth floor. Also, covered-up windows dating back to the Thirties will be restored, but probably the biggest change will be a new glass dome created on the roof so that natural light can flood in.
Once the new escalators are in place, in about a year’s time, work will start on the entrance hall in Hans Crescent in 2017.
