Here is a preview of the remarkable looking Histoire de Tourbillon 3 Watch Harry Winston will present at Baselworld 2012 in March. The Histoire de Tourbillion 3 is made up of polished and satin brushed 18 karat white gold and Zalium alloy metal case housing two of the tourbillions in a solo lop sided oval with the third tourbillion sitting on it’s own. All three tourbillions work together to regulate time properly and also extremely accurately.
The double tourbillon is a bi-axial mechanism that has an inner tourbillon rotating each 40 seconds and an outer one rotating each 120 seconds. The third, separated tourbillon spins once each 36 seconds, which HW says is most effective in the vertical position. Both tourbillons are linked by a differential, similar to the Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 2. The watchcase, engineered to display the tourbillon systems to their best advantage, is 65mm wide and 46mm tall. The complex architecture is constructed of 77 parts in white gold and non-reflecting sapphire crystals.
The hours and minutes are shown on discs rotating against their respective markers, and the seconds on a scale around the bi-axial tourbillon. Harry Winston shows off its flair with gemstones by using sapphires and citrines to indicate the power reserve. Eleven color-graded blue sapphires from dark to pale show the power left in the mainspring. The markers for the hours and minutes are color-matched with the gemstones. When the six yellow citrines appear against the marker, it’s time to wind up the watch.
Limited to just 20 units, the watch with a Black Opaline dial is finished with hand-sewn black alligator leather and a double pin 18-carat while gold buckle.
