Kazimir Malevich’s painting “Mystic Suprematism (Black Cross on Red Oval)“, that was returned to the artist’s heirs after a half-century could reach a price of $45 million when hit the auction block on November 5th. According to Sotheby’s, this 1920-22 work is the last of a group of five paintings returned to the Russian artist’s heirs. The canvas was exhibited in Berlin in 1927. The artist of Polish origin, born in Kiev, were not allowed to leave the Soviet Union.
The painting was eventually sold to the Stedelijk (STAYD’-lihk) Museum in Amsterdam where exhibited for the last 50 years.
Of the four other repossessed pictures, two were sold at auction at Sotheby’s, one of which reached a record price of $60 million.
