The shoes were designed to be precise replicas of the film version, right down to the contour of the gray fabric upper, the speckled Zolatone sole and glowing Nike logo strap. The astonishingly light 2011 Nike MAG (the name refers to magnetic levitation) is the company’s first rechargeable shoe, and can glow for five hours between charges.
Nike’s CEO has announced that 1,500 pairs will be auctioned off on eBay with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Michael J. Fox, who has the disease and who memorably played Marty McFly in the franchise, appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman to get the word out and to show off the cool Nike kicks. He said, This brings together three populations of people with major joneses. The sneakerheads, the ‘Back to the Future’ guys, who, believe me, are out of their minds — in a good way! Thank God for them. And also people in the Parkinson’s community who have an interest in research.
The first pair of Nike’s future shoes sold for a whopping $37,500! British rapper Tinie Tempah did not complain about the money, when he paid much more than the eBay asking price at a live auction in Los Angeles last week. [Photo: The Hundreds]
