Marilyn Monroe in Black Cocktail
A black crepe cocktail dress, worn by the famous actress Marilyn Monroe in 1958 has fetched a record-breaking $348,000 on Sunday, May 8. The dress surpassed its presale estimate of between $20,000 and $30,000 by a large sum.
According to the Julien’s Auctions, the legendary blonde bombshell wore the dress, a black crepe cocktail-length dress with deep v-neck and low cut back and pouf hemline, to a party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The only identification in the dress is a sewn in label reading front, a common addition to custom-made garments from that era. Monroe also appears in the dress on the cover of a book, Marilyn Monroe: From Beginning to End, by Michael Ventura.
Several other Monroe memorabilia sold at the auction included an MGM-branded one-piece bathing suit – $84,000, original negatives and transparencies – $73,800, Pucci ensemble – $48,000 and a bra liner – $6,785. [Julien’s Auctions]
