Montblanc, the luxury pen and watchmaker, has come up with an ingenious idea to blend traditional watchmaking with smart technology – thus reaching a luxury consumer who doesn’t want to scrimp on tradition in favour of tech. The brand has announced an optional e-Strap that’ll equip its Timewalker Urban Speed Collection. The e-Strap brings the usual activity tracking, notifications, music controls, remote camera trigger and other features found on wrist-worn wearables.
Germany’s Montblanc is embracing wearable technology with the introduction of the e-Strap, a device that can be added to any traditional timepiece.
The e-Strap band adds a four-centimetre widget to the inside of the watchband, complete with screen and a notification system. It can be connected with a smartphone app offering all the standard notifications. The band itself is Florentine leather and the widget is made from a carbon material that Montblanc describes as “diamond-like carbon” providing a premium feel.
It comes as a strap option for the 2015 Montblanc Timewalker Urban Speed watch range, priced from £1,605 ($2,440) depending on model, or as a standalone wearable for around £250 ($380).
e-Strap offers not only connectivity via Bluetooth Low Energy with Android and iOS smartphones, but the practical convenience of an interchangeable strap for times when the wearer simply wants the appeal of a classic watch
Visible only on the underside of the wrist, the digitized strap was designed to complement, and not compete with the traditional timepiece
