German car maker’s, Porsche, is now taking orders for its first publicly available hybrid sports car, the Porsche 918 Spyder. Production development is proceeding apace in the wake of the outstanding customer response to the concept car unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2010.
918 Spyder features a 8 cylinder engine capable of producing around 500 horsepower. If that wasn’t enough, Porsche has also crammed two different electric motors into the 918 Spyder that provide an added 218 horsepower. Range on electricity alone is just 16 miles and is capable of a full recharge in about 7 hours utilizing a standard 110 watt outlet. In more interesting news, the 918 Spyder is capable of sprinting from 0 – 60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds while maintaining a 78 miles per gallon.
Porsche 918 Spyder production kicks off in September 2013, and it will be limited to 918 cars in total with base price of $845,000 each. If you’re one of those 918 people, you can advertise your future Spyder ownership by purchasing the new Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder (that is the car’s full name).
The Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder, will have styling cues taken from the 918 Spyder hybrid, including carbon fiber pieces inside and out and “acid green” accents in various places such as the brake calipers. It will cost a relatively paltry $160,000 for the hard-top version and $172,000 for the convertible.
If you buy a 918 Spyder and the “companion” 911 Turbo S, the latter car will have the same production number as your Spyder. And you will have spent over a million dollars. The special edition Turbo S is available for order now and will be delivered later this year. [CNN Money]
